You need a pet shop licence in order to open a pet shop in the Town of Orangeville. This includes any establishment where more than three animals are sold as pets at any point during the year.

You need to renew your pet shop licence each year.

Application details

Please include the following information with your application:

  • application type (new, renewal or change of ownership)
  • company name, location and contact information
  • owner of the building where the business is located
  • partnership details, if necessary
  • date and signature

Fees

The following application fees will apply depending on the type of application:

  • $50 for a pet shop licence renewal
  • $100 for a new pet shop licence
  • $100 to change the ownership on the pet shop licence

Rules and regulations

You must follow all the rules and regulations set out in the Pet Shop By-law. Here are a few of the rules and regulations:

  • you cannot keep prohibited animals in a pet shop
  • the pet shop must be kept in a clean and sanitary manner
  • animals must be kept in a sanitary environment with appropriate bedding, lighting and temperatures
  • all tanks, cages and containers must provide maximum comfort for the specific animal species including appropriate size and height
  • ensure there are safeguards to prevent undue direct physical contact with animals and the general public
  • all staff handling animals must receive adequate instruction and be supervised in the handling and care of animals
  • cages, tanks and containers cannot be overcrowded

Please view the Pet Shop By-law for a complete listing of prohibited animals that cannot be sold in a pet shop in the Town of Orangeville. Prohibited animals include but are not limited to the following list of animals.

Mammals

These mammals are prohibited as pets:

  • cattle, goats, sheep and pigs
  • non-human primates such as gorillas and chimpanzees
  • marsupials such as kangaroos, opossums, koalas and wallabies
  • elephants
  • horses and donkeys
  • seals and walruses
  • flying lemurs
  • anteaters, sloths and armadillos
  • platypus
  • pangolins and scaly anteaters
  • whales
  • aardvarks
  • hyrax
  • manatees
  • camels
  • foxes, bears, mongooses, hyenas, seals and walruses

Reptiles

The following reptiles are prohibited as pets:

  • tuatara
  • alligators, crocodile and gavials
  • helodermatidae

The following snakes are also prohibited:

  • cobra, mamba and krait
  • sea snakes
  • old world vipers
  • pit vipers
  • boas and pythons

Arachnids

The following arachnids are prohibited:

  • scorpions
  • spiders
  • solifugae
  • pseudoscorpiones

Birds

The following birds are prohibited as pets:

  • ducks, geese, swans and screamers
  • pheasants, grouse, Guinea fowls and turkeys
  • ostriches, rheas, cassowaries, emus and kiwis
  • owls
  • osprey, vultures, falcons, hawks and eagles
