General Interest Programs
Art (Ages 3 to 11)

 Experiment with basic art techniques including sculpting, painting, drawing and more. Participants will be encouraged to let their creativity flow. The session will end with an art exhibit for family and friends.

 Cooking (Ages 8 to 11)

 Learn the basics of cooking. This program focuses on expanding taste buds, gaining kitchen confidence, enforcing kitchen safety, promoting good food choices and learning different cooking techniques. Participants will be involved in menu planning and create their own cookbook!

Drama and Creative Arts Club (Ages 10 to 13)

Explore the fundamentals of drama like creating characters and using improvisation skills to tell a story through active group games and activities. Build your confidence and make friends in this fun and social environment. A showcase for friends and family will take place on the last day of the program.

Home Alone (Ages 9 to 12)

The Town of Orangeville has collaborated with SOS 4 Kids to offer our Home Alone Course. This course will be conducted by an SOS certified instructor.  Home Alone helps bridge the gap in your child’s first steps to staying home on their own without adult supervision. This course covers topics such as street smarts, people safety, online and internet safety, home fires, emergencies and other situations, and basic first aid skills.

Babysitting (Ages 11 to 15)

The Babysitting course, refreshed and revised, now has a greater emphasis on First Aid skills. The Canadian Red Cross Babysitting course, taught by SOS 4 Kids, covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. This aim of this course is to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. The updated curriculum, complete with new science, also provides improved learning when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency.

Recreation Leaders (Ages 14 to 16)

Participants will understand the basics of leadership theory and different styles of leadership. They will further identity, understand, and develop their emerging leadership style and qualities while learning how to motivate others through interactive and cooperative games. Participants will also participate in a community project. This program will promote development of leadership through team-based activities and problem-based learning. The participants will focus on goal setting and communication skills. An opportunity to volunteer for one of our other programs while enrolled in the course or after the session will be provided.

Indoor running shoes are required. Please note that parent/guardians are not permitted in the gymnasium but must remain on site for the duration of the program.

 This introductory basketball program focuses on developing skills in a non-competitive environment, with a focus on fundamental skills such as co-ordination, co-operation, and gross motor movements. Participants will learn the rules, dribbling, passing and shooting skills as well as participate in structured game play.

Holiday Camp

Join us for holiday themed activities, games and crafts. Camp is offered to children ages 4-5 years and 6-13 years. Drop-off begins at 8:00am. Camp activities run 9:00am-4:00pm. Pick-up concludes at 5:00pm.

Skating & Hockey Lessons

Skating lessons are available beginning at age 2 at Alder Recreation Centre and Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre.

Required Equipment

For skating lessons, required equipment includes:

  • Ice Skates
    • Hockey skates are preferred for beginners;
    • Ensure skates are sharpened prior to first use;
    • BOB skates are not permitted.
  • CSA-Approved hockey helmet
    • Bicycle, snowboarding, BMX and other types of helmets are not permitted for skating;
    • A full face mask (an accessory attached to the hockey helmet) is strongly recommended but not required.
  • Warm Clothing
    • Jacket, warm pants or snow pants, and mittens are required.

Skating Lessons Equipment Guide

For power skating and private hockey lessons, CSA-approved full hockey equipment, including CSA-approved hockey helmet with facemask and hockey stick are mandatory.

NEW Parent & Player Pre-Power (Ages 2 to 5)

In this NEW program participants are taught to stand up, balance, forward and backward movements, and to stop in preparation for playing hockey, with the assistance of a parent or caregiver (ages 16+). Each participant must be accompanied by a parent/caregiver. "Fun time" during each class will include pucks.

For players, CSA-approved full hockey equipment, including CSA-approved hockey helmet with facemask and hockey stick are mandatory.


Parent/caregiver must be 16+ years old, have skates, CSA hockey helmet, hockey gloves and stick. Parent/caregiver must have some skating ability including forward, backward skating and stopping.

Take control of your edges in an on-ice group class that breaks down the fundamental components of skating efficiency, power, balance, and agility which will enhance the skills of any player. 

  • Classes include work on using all four edges of your skate blade, full-stride extension, recovery, balance, pivots, crossovers, tight turns, backwards skating, agility, and stops.
This program is suitable for participants who are registered and currently participating in a hockey program at the Rep or House League level. Players must be able to skate the length of the ice with speed, and have backwards skating ability.

CSA-approved full hockey equipment, including CSA-approved hockey helmet with facemask and hockey stick are mandatory.

Technical Skating:
Classes include work on using all four edges of your skate blade, full-stride extension, recovery, balance, pivots, crossovers, tight turns, backwards skating, agility, and stops.

Technical Skating with Puck Development:
Classes include work on using all four edges of your skate blade, full-stride extension, recovery, balance, pivots, crossovers, tight turns, backwards skating, agility, and stops as well as shooting, puck control, and other essential hockey skills.


This program is suitable for participants who are registered and currently participating in a hockey program at the Rep or House League level.

Registered Minor Sports Groups

Registered Minor Sports Groups allow non-profit minor sport groups to register with the Town of Orangeville to receive reduced fees and other benefits.  Non-profit minor sports groups are the primary providers of organized sport in the Town of Orangeville for children and youth.  The Town of Orangeville, along with other communities across Ontario and Canada, recognizes that affordable access to recreation facilities is an important factor in ensuring maximum participation in sports and other programs that promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.

Benefits to Registered Minor Sports Groups
  • 20% reduction in the base prime-time facility rental fee;
  • Free town space for annual general meetings when elections are held;
  • Free access to semi-annual central registration events hosted by the Parks and Recreation Department;
  • Access to Town of Orangeville advertising and promotion opportunities (i.e. promoting special events in the Parks and Recreation section of the Town page and website);
  • Opportunities to participate in volunteer training and recognition as available.
Eligibility Criteria
  • The primary mandate of the organization must be to provide equal opportunity and access for Orangeville residents under the age of 18 to participate in sport and recreation activities;
  • The organization must be a non-profit organization and operate under the authority of a volunteer board or committee;
  • The organization must be operated in an open and democratic manner through the holding of annual membership meeting and elections of an executive/board from the membership to carry out the wishes of the general membership;
  • The organizations base of operation must be in the Town of Orangeville;
  • The organization must have a minimum of 60% of its registrants as residents/rate payers of the Town of Orangeville or it must be the only organization providing the activity to Orangeville residents. (i.e. Orangeville Girls Volleyball League has 55% of its registrants as residents but it is the only organization providing girls volleyball);
  • The organization must be in good financial standing with the Town;

Registration and Approval Process

Qualifying organizations must successfully complete the registration process to be eligible for the benefits described.

Organizations must submit a completed application form including the required submissions.

 

  1. The information will be reviewed by staff for completeness, and will notify the organization on eligibility;
  2. Organizations must apply annually to continue to receive the benefits.
