Blizzard conditions leads to some cancellations

Feb 25, 2019 | Communications | General

Storm update: 11:30 a.m.

Orangeville Transit continues to operate with a small revision on the green route which is using Buena Vista Drive & not Highway 10. Operations are providing additional salting/sanding on Buena Vista Drive.

The Town has a full complement of plows, loaders and sidewalk trackless machines which are continuing to run. Operations has indicated that 90 percent of Town is plowed. Visibility is poor at times and blowing snow is reported to be hampering the plowing, particularly in the west end of Town. In the west end, mains have been plowed twice, and Operations continues to monitor.

OPP and Dufferin County have asked Operations that the Town erect road closed signs on Veterans Road at Hansen Boulevard, as well as on Road 109 at Riddell Road.

The Recreation Division has cancelled all registered and drop-in recreational (instructor and non-instructor led) classes for the remainder of the day, plus the Otters permit for the afternoon. The concessions have been closed for the remainder of the day.

A blizzard warning is still in effect. Snow is forecast to stop at 2 p.m., with blowing snow to occur much of the afternoon. Winds will be from 40 to 60 kms per hour, diminishing to 35 to 50 around 6 p.m.

Storm update: 10:30:30 a.m.

A blizzard brings cancellations. However, Orangeville Transit continues to run. There is one route change to the green route. The green route is not travelling on Highway 10, due to the closure of Dufferin County roads.

The Town plows are out on the roads. The main roads have been cleared and the plows are moving to clear the secondary local roads. There will be problems on clearing some roads as cars are parked on the roads. If residents can move their cars parked on the roads where possible, the plows will be able to clear the roads better.

The trackless plows continue to clear the sidewalks to stay on top of the snow accumulation.

Both libraries are closed all day.

Both recreation centres are open with minimal staff, however, programs have been cancelled. Check the Town of Orangeville website or call the recreation centres for updates on program cancellations.

Radar is calling for the snow to stop between noon and 1 p.m. with the winds gusts of 40-60 kms per hour to continue throughout the evening.

The Town's off-leash dog park on Hansen Boulevard is closed due to weather conditions.

At this time, the Orangeville Council meeting is going ahead as scheduled but the situation will continue to be assessed as the day progresses.

The property tax payment due date of February 25 has been extended to February 26.

Please check the website or call before venturing out to any of the Town’s scheduled programs.

Dufferin County Waste Services reports that waste collection trucks are unable to collect in all Monday zones today due to the significant winter weather. For those affected, please double up garbage next week. Call the County of Dufferin with questions 519-941-2816 Ext. 2620.
