Come celebrate Family Literacy Day on January 28 with the Orangeville Public Library and special guests at the Alder Street Branch.

Words and art will come alive with special guests Mary Scattergood and Jennifer Cuthbert.

“The Library is delighted to once again participate in this national program,” said Darla Fraser, Chief Executive Officer. “Just fifteen minutes a day can dramatically improve a child’s literacy skills. From reading the shopping list, to creating a story together while doing the dishes, to playing a board game, learning can be part of your daily routine.”

Family Literacy Day is a national awareness initiative created by ABC Life Literacy Canada in 1999 and is held annually to raise awareness of the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a family. This year’s Family Literacy Day theme is 'Celebrate your heritage'. An activity book with tips and activities to explore and learn about your heritage and culture as a family will be available at the library.

Family Literacy Day Activities at Alder:

Mary Scattergood – 10 a.m.
All ages

Local author and artist Mary Scattergood will read from the stories she has written and illustrated. Mary has produced three ‘There Are Fairies’ books, and two books about Pierre, a boy living in Quebec. Mary’s beautiful illustrations allow you to peek into her childhood as her fairies are inspired by her memories of her grandmother’s garden in England.

Jennifer Cuthbert – 11 a.m.
Ages 6-12

Jennifer Cuthbert, creator of the Adventures of Lollipop comics, will host a cartoon workshop. She started drawing her Lollipop and friends characters when she was nine-years-old growing up in Brampton. Participants will learn helpful tips for creating their own comic strips, including text features and a step-by-step character drawing lesson.

Both special events are drop-in programs.
