Commemorative bench program
Are you interested in honouring those who have helped shape our community? Our commemorative bench program is a meaningful way to recognize the individuals, teams and groups who have had a positive contribution in Orangeville.
You can apply for a commemorative bench to be installed around the community. Each one includes a plaque and can be placed in available locations at local parks, trailways or at Greenwood Cemetery. Locations are limited and available on a first-come, first-reviewed basis.
Eligibility criteria (who can be included?)
Commemorations are intended to honour contributions that positively impacted the community. To qualify for commemoration, the nominee must meet at least one of the following:
- Individual: must be, or have been, a resident of the Town of Orangeville for most of their life.
- Team: at least 75 per cent of team members must live in Orangeville.
- Group: at least 75 per cent of group members must live in Orangeville.
- Event: must have taken place within the Orangeville’s boundaries.
Please note: the Town reserves the right to withdraw any commemoration if credible evidence arises indicating involvement in criminal activity, membership in organizations that do not promote equality or accessibility or behaviour contrary to the Town’s Code of Conduct.
Apply for a bench
Step one: check available locations (interactive map) |
|
Use the interactive map below to see which bench locations are available. Only locations shown as “available” on the map can be requested. All other locations are unavailable or at capacity. If you are unable to use the interactive map, please contact the Town and we can provide available locations in an accessible format. |
Step two: complete the application form |
|
To begin the process, you must complete and submit the Commemoration Application Request form. Your request will only be reviewed for approval if the application form is complete and the nominee meets the eligibility criteria in this program. Please note: If the request is submitted by someone other than an immediate family member, the Town will require written consent from the family. |
Step three: application review (Town) |
|
Applications are reviewed by the Community Services leadership team. After the review, the applicant will be contacted to confirm details and arrange payment for the commemorative item. |
Costs, installation and maintenance
Cost |
|
Bench costs vary by location due to differences in materials and installation requirements. The commemoration package (bench, plaque and installation) costs $1,700 to $2,300 plus HST. Applicants are responsible for all costs. |
Installation standards |
| The Town ensures installations meet standards for size, appearance and location to support a consistent look across Town parks, cemeteries and trailways. |
Maintenance and lifespan |
|
Once installed, the Town will maintain the commemorative bench and plaque for the lifetime of the bench (average 15 years from the installation date). When the bench reaches the end of its lifespan:
