Notice of intention to designate under the Ontario Heritage Act

Take notice that The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Orangeville intends to designate the above noted property under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. 0.18., as amended, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest.

Description of property

299 Broadway is located on the north side of Broadway on the northwest corner of Broadway and Ada Street within the Town of Orangeville, Ontario. The property contains a two and one-half storey commercial structure that is formerly a residence.

Statement of cultural heritage value or interest

The property has design and physical value as it contains a representative example of a late 19th century vernacular residence with both Queen Anne and Italianate style influences with a construction date of 1882 to 1883. The property at 299 Broadway has a Queen Anne style influenced massing in its height and layout, with Italianate decorative woodwork. Therefore, the structure is a representative vernacular interpretation with influences from both styles.
The property has design and physical value as it displays an uncommonly high degree of craftsmanship within the Town of Orangeville. Examples of this craftsmanship include the gable wood dormer with decorative wood detail, decorative wooden cornice with paired brackets, general decorative wood detailing, buff brick banding, and the curved eaves, soffit and fascia with brackets.

The property has historical value because it has a direct historical association with Elgin Myers. Myers was a solicitor who moved to Orangeville after being called to the bar in 1877. In 1890, Myers was appointed a Queen’s Council and in 1891, he was appointed County Crown Attorney of Dufferin. In 1892, Myers gained widespread notoriety after a public exchange over Canadian annexation to the United States with Premier Sir Oliver Mowat. Myers was a significant member of the political community in Orangeville for many years and has direct associations himself with larger political issues in late 19th century Canadian politics.

Property’s heritage attributes

The property at 299 Broadway is a representative example of an Ontario vernacular residence with Queen Anne and Italianate style influences, which contains the following heritage attributes that exhibit this value:

  • two and one-half storey structure with an irregular hip and gable roof
  • gable wood dormer with decorative wood detail
  • asymmetrical plan with projecting two and one-half storey gable bays on the south and east façades
  • red brick exterior with buff brick detailing
  • wide eaves with decorative wooden cornice with paired brackets
  • segmental arch windows with stone sills and buff brick hood moulds
  • buff brick banding above the foundation, top of the bay windows, and through the second storey windows
  • south and east façades comprising:
  • square windows in gable peaks with circular wooden surrounds
  • curved eaves, soffit and fascia with brackets
  • paired second storey windows (south façade)
  • bay windows with decorative wood cornice, wooden brackets, rectangular window openings, and stone lintels and sills
  • enclosed entrance porch with flat roof, decorative wood detailing and paired brackets, buff brick quoins, and full width transom above door

Submitting an objection to this notice

Any person who objects to this proposed designation may, no later than 4 p.m. on September 24, 2026, give the Town Clerk, a Notice of Objection, setting out their reasons for the objection and all relevant facts. Objections can be submitted to [email protected] or delivered in-person to the clerk’s office at Town Hall, 87 Broadway, Orangeville.

If no objection is received within the designated period, Council may consider and pass a bylaw designating this property under Part IV of the Act.

If a Notice of Objection is received, the Council of the Town of Orangeville will consider the objection on or before December 23, 2026 and make a decision to withdraw this intention to designate the property, or pass a bylaw to designate the property.
