Notice of intention to designate under the Ontario Heritage Act

Take notice that The Council of the Corporation of the Town of Orangeville intends to designate the above noted property under Part IV, Section 29 of the Ontario Heritage Act, R.S.O. 1990, c. 0.18., as amended, as a property of cultural heritage value or interest.

Description of property

The property at 255 Broadway is located on the north side of Broadway between Lousia Street and Faulkner Street within the Town of Orangeville, Ontario. The property contains a two and one-half storey residential structure.

Statement of cultural heritage value or interest

The property has design and physical value. The property contains a representative example of a late 19th century Queen Anne style residence that was built between 1885 and 1892. The Queen Anne design elements of 255 Broadway include its two and one-half storey height, multiple rooflines with gables, brick exterior with dichromatic brick hood moulds, asymmetrical floor plan, projecting two storey bays, covered wrap around wood porch, and decorative wood detailing in the gable peaks.

The property has historical and associative value due to its direct historical associations with Alexander D. McKitrick, who was a significant journalist and politician in Orangeville. McKitrick, was the owner of local newspaper, The Orangeville Banner from 1897 until his death in 1949. McKitrick was also the Mayor of Orangeville from 1908-1909. The property also that demonstrates the work of Donald McDonald, who was a significant local builder and businessman in Orangeville. McDonald has been credited with building other late 19th century residences in the town. Further, McDonald, himself, was a significant member of the Orangeville community – both as a builder and owner of a planing mill and the Orangeville Casket Factory.

Property’s heritage attributes

The property at 255 Broadway is a representative example of a Queen Anne style residence, which contains the following heritage attributes that reflect this value:

  • two and one-half storey structure with an irregular hip and gable roof
  • asymmetrical plan
  • two storey gable bays on the south and east façades with wood decorations and round arch windows
  • red brick exterior
  • dichromatic brick hood moulds
  • stone sills
  • segmental arch window openings
  • wrap around wood porch with front entry gable with decorative woodwork and dentils
  • second storey enclosed porch with wood dentils and shingles

Submitting an objection to this notice

Any person who objects to this proposed designation may, no later than 4 p.m. on September 24, 2026 give the Town Clerk, a Notice of Objection, setting out their reasons for the objection and all relevant facts. Objections can be submitted to [email protected] or delivered in-person to the clerk’s office at Town Hall, 87 Broadway, Orangeville.

If no objection is received within the designated period, Council may consider and pass a bylaw designating this property under Part IV of the Act.

If a Notice of Objection is received, the Council of the Town of Orangeville will consider the objection on or before December 23, 2026 and make a decision to withdraw this intention to designate the property, or pass a bylaw to designate the property.
