The Big Leplowski. Edgar Allan Snow. Yer a Blizzard, Harry. Sled Zeppelin. You may be familiar with these unique snowplow names, generated through naming contests in other municipalities over the years.

Now, it’s Orangeville’s turn to come up with a witty plow name.

This year, the Town of Orangeville acquired a brand-new, state of the art snowplow and invites the community to become involved in bestowing a fitting name upon it.

“Many other municipalities have held similar contests over the years, and they have been a huge hit,” said Mayor Lisa Post. “It’s a wonderful way to get the community engaged. We are excited to see what names residents come up with and can’t wait to see what this new plow will be called.”

The new plow, a 2023 International Workstar, is the first of its kind in Orangeville, featuring an upgraded design on the cutting edges on the plow and wing. These elements are now in multiple sections, which allow the edge to form to the uneven asphalt for a closer plow.

Safety for plow drivers and those around them is also improved thanks to an increase in the viewing area from the driver's seat by 30 per cent and a heated windshield that combats ice buildup on wipers during winter storms. The plow also features double-wrapped hydraulic lines to combat wear.

As far as snowplows go, the new plow stands out – and the Town of Orangeville believes it deserves a name that stands out too.

Here’s how the contest will work:

  • Members of the community will be able to submit name ideas until September 30 by visiting orangeville.ca/nameourplow.
  • Town Staff will review the names, look for ones with multiple submissions, and narrow the list down. Once a shortlist has been created, the Town will open voting to the community to ultimate select the winner.
