The Town of Orangeville is declaring a Significant Weather Event as of December 23 at 11 a.m. in response to the inclement weather that has moved into the area. Heavy snowfall and high winds are expected and accumulation began early this morning with temperatures dropping quickly.

The last time a Significant Weather Event was declared in the Town of Orangeville was January 2022.

These weather hazards, provided by Environment and Climate Change Canada can create significant danger for those using roads in and around Orangeville. Please take extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel.

What does declaring a significant weather event mean?

Our winter operations team will continue to work, however it may take longer to plow roads, sidewalks and subdivisions. This declaration suspends the standard timelines required for municipalities to meet their winter maintenance objectives until the significant weather event has ended.

At this time, our winter operations team has sanded every street and has been working on plowing the main streets. Residents are unlikely to see residential roads plowed again until later tonight or tomorrow.

Residents are asked to stay off the roads and sidewalks. If you must go out please be cautious, go slow, and drive according to weather conditions.

Here are some things to remember:

• Move parked vehicles off the road - All cars parked on roads need to be moved as soon as possible to allow room for the plows. Streets with parked cars won’t be plowed and vehicles may be ticketed.

• Bring in outdoor holiday décor, winter planters or bins – High winds can quickly pick up loose decorations like inflatable Santas and winter planters, as well as garbage bins and blue boxes. Before the winds pick up, it’s best to bring those items in.
