The Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) has approved the application to disband the Orangeville Police Service. The consent of the OCPC is required under the Police Services Act.

This follows the December 2, 2019 acceptance of an Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) costing proposal by Orangeville Council.

The Town of Orangeville submitted an application to the commission on March 5, 2020 requesting the disbandment of the Orangeville Police Service as Orangeville intends to enter into an agreement with the Ministry of the Solicitor General for the provision of its police services by the OPP. Once the agreement with the OPP is in place the employment of staff with the Orangeville Police Service will be terminated. Many of these individuals may be offered positions with the OPP and the majority of Orangeville’s uniform officers have applied to the OPP.

The focus of the OCPC is public consultation, effective policing, and that severance pay for members is either resolved or referred to arbitration.

The OCPC decision, dated May 22, 2020, states that under the proposal “adequate and effective police services will be maintained for the residents of Orangeville by the transition to the OPP”. The transition date remains on track for October 1, 2020.

“This completes an important step in the transition to OPP and future cost savings for the town,” said Mayor Sandy Brown.
