Winter Control

Public Works is responsible for the winter control on the Town's streets and sidewalks. Winter control includes snowplowing, sanding and salting, and snow removal. Winter control is carried out by municipally owned and operated equipment and contracted labour and equipment.

The level of service that is provided is covered by a policy that is approved by Council.  Generally, snowplowing operations begin if a snowfall accumulation exceeds 5 cm.  Sanding and salting operations will typically begin if the road conditions deteriorate due to snowfall or ice conditions to the point where traffic safety is a concern.  Snow is typically removed from the main streets, to keep the driving and parking lanes clear of snow, and from the residential streets when there is a lack of snow storage and visibility may become a safety issue for people driving on the street.

Sanding & Salting Roads & Sidewalks

Public Works is responsible for the sanding and salting of the roads and sidewalks in the Town of Orangeville.

The level of service that is provided is covered by policy that is approved by Council.  Sanding and salting is typically done in conjunction with snowplowing or when the road conditions deteriorate to the point where safety of vehicles using the road may be compromised.

Sanding and salting of sidewalks is typically done in conjunction with sidewalk snow clearance. Council has directed staff to clear all sidewalks in Town, effective December 1, 2008.

Snow Removal Policy

Snow removal is done in areas, when necessary, to keep streets safe for pedestrians and vehicular traffic. Snow will be removed from arterial and collector roads where there are inadequate snow storage areas on the boulevard and from local streets when snow banks are over 1.5m high.

Residents are reminded that there is a municipal by-law is in place that prohibits the parking of vehicles on municipal streets from December 1st to March 31st of the following year. The prohibition is in place between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. to help facilitate effective snowplowing and snow removal operations.

Garbage and recycling materials that are set out for collection should be placed on the driveway about one metre from the street and not on the snowbanks to assist snowplowing and waste collection crews.
