June 4 to 10, 2017 - Access Awareness Week
I, Mayor Jeremy D Williams, do hereby proclaim June 4 to June 10, 2017 as “Access Awareness Week” in the Town of Orangeville;
Whereas, National Access Awareness Week was first established in 1988 after Rick Hansen’s Man in Motion Tour which promoted better community access for people with disabilities; and
Whereas, people with disabilities regularly face barriers that prevent them from working, traveling in and enjoying their communities; and
Whereas, accessibility and inclusion is essential for ensuring that all community members have equity in opportunities, and the ability to fully participate in community life; and
Whereas, accessibility affects all aspects of community life – physical, social and economic including employment, transportation, recreation, housing and other opportunities; and
Whereas, the Town of Orangeville Council is committed to becoming a barrier free and accessible Town and adopted a Vision and Values Statement with the first value on the list as, “We Value: a barrier free community”; and
Whereas, to help celebrate Access Awareness Week, Access Orangeville has scheduled the following activities:
June 7: Free rides all day for everyone on Orangeville Transit.
June 10: Free swim 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Alder Street Recreation Centre.
June 12: Annual presentation of “Promoting a Barrier Free Community Award” at Council Meeting.
Now Therefore, I encourage all citizens to support equality of access, opportunity and outcomes for persons with disabilities.
Jeremy D Williams, Mayor
