Property Standards bylaws establish standards for the maintenance and occupancy of property in a municipality.
The Town of Orangeville's Property Standards Bylaw Number 6-2002, as amended, prescribes the standards of maintenance and occupancy which apply to all properties within the Town of Orangeville.
All property owners are required to repair and maintain their property in accordance with the standards in the bylaw. The standards are prescribed to ensure the health and safety of Orangeville residents, and to ensure that residents take pride in their property and their neighbourhood.
The bylaw includes owners of rental properties, private, commercial and residential properties. By maintaining yards, exterior areas, including parking surfaces, residents can enjoy their neighbourhoods and take pride in their communities.
Any tenant who wishes to register a complaint with the Town with respect to the lack of maintenance in his/her dwelling or apartment building should first advise the landlord in writing of the concerns in order to allow the landlord the opportunity to address the maintenance issues first. If these concerns are not addressed adequately, a complaint can be registered with the bylaw enforcement office. Landlords are not responsible if there is a specific agreement between the owner and the tenants that assigns responsibility for the maintenance of the property to the tenants.
