There are fire hydrants connected to the watermains that the Fire Department can use during a fire fighting emergency. It is important that the hydrants be accessible at all times.
The Public Works Department also uses the hydrants to flush the watermains on a regular basis. The flushing is done to keep the water fresh and help minimize taste and odour problems that may occur because of minimal circulation through the mains. The flushing is done on Wednesdays, generally between 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
All of the hydrants are opened at least once a year to make sure they are operable. This extensive checking is usually done over a three or four-week period in the fall of the year. The schedule for the annual hydrant maintenance is advertised in the local newspapers, and on this website.
