Events planned to celebrate 2017 Seniors' Week

Events and activities are planned from June 12-17 to mark Seniors’ Week in the Town of Orangeville. The events are planned by the Orangeville Seniors/Age-Friendly Community Committee, with support from local organizations. The theme for this year’s activities is “living your best life”.

Free activities on June 12 at the Alder Recreation Centre include: shared lane swim from 8:30-11:30 a.m., a family swim from 10:30-11:30 a.m., co-ed spin/circuit at 5:15 p.m., boot camp from 6:30-7:15 p.m., aquafit from 7:30-8:20 p.m., and a lane swim from 8:30-9:30 p.m.

Free activities on June 12 at the Tony Rose Memorial Sports Centre include: a lane swim from 7-8:30 a.m., aquafit from 8:35-9:25 a.m., body circuit from 9:15-10 a.m., stretching and restorative yoga from 10:15-11 a.m., low impact aquafit from 10-10:50 a.m., public swim from 11 a.m. to noon, active 55+ fitness from 11:15 a.m. to noon, lane swim 12-1 p.m., pilates from 6:15-6:45 p.m., and strength training from 6:45-7:15 p.m.

A barbecue lunch and euchre tournament is set for June 12 at the Chartwell Montgomery Village Retirement Residence. The barbecue will be held from 12-1 p.m. A euchre tournament is set for 11 a.m. to noon and 1-2:30 p.m. RSVP to Lynda Dickinson at 226-706-8527 or [email protected]

The Orangeville and District Seniors Centre barbecue is on June 13 at 26 Bythia Street, starting at 11:45 a.m. The cost is $6 per person. For further information, call 519-941-6012.

June 14 is Seniors Day at Island Lake from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. You can tour the Memorial Forest and amphitheatre via people mover transportation. Free park admission, refreshments and entertainment. For more information or group bookings call Mike Walker at 519-940-9539.

A Health and Wellness Fair takes place on June 15 on a drop-in basis from 1-4 p.m. at the Lord Dufferin Centre Retirement Residence. See professionals showcasing health-related products and services. There will be free admission and parking as well as light refreshments. Participants can RSVP to the Lord Dufferin Centre at 519-941-8433.

June 16 marks an Author Afternoon at the Mill Street Branch of the Orangeville Public Library from 1-2 p.m. The guest will be Peter Jennings, with a presentation and reading from his newest book, “Why Being Happy Matters”. For further information call 519-941-0610.

The Royal Canadian Legion turkey dinner is set for June 16 from 5-9 p.m. The cost is $10 per person -- eat in or take out. Entertainment will be provided by Debbie Bayshaw. For more information, call 519-942-4895.

It’s Seniors Appreciation Day at the Farmers’ Market on June 17. There will be senior lifestyle demonstrations in Alexandra Park from 9:30 a.m. to noon.

Orangeville Transit will offer free rides for seniors (55+) on June 17.

“I encourage seniors to take advantage of the diverse activities that are planned from June 12-17 and I wish them all a wonderful Seniors Week,” said Councillor Scott Wilson who chairs the Seniors/Age-Friendly Community Committee. “This week-long celebration in June will highlight and recognize the significant contributions older adults make to our community.”
